I stand in front of my students and remind them that they have assignments due and that they have to participate in discussion, and they STILL "forget" on a regular basis. I then make the extra effort to post giant colorful reminders on the class homepage-- and they "forget" anyway.

How much extra work does this newsletter entail? We adjuncts need to be very jealous of our time, as you know. I find myself getting sucked into doing all sorts of extra things to make my classes "better," but I'm beginning to resent the extra time when I get paid so little.

I struggle to keep my syllabi at two page *sigh*. I remember getting a syllabus from one instructor that barely took up one side of one page. Tenure is beautiful thing.

Melyssa posted a link to your blog on FB, but the link didn't work. I had to comment...

I had a student who attended fewer than half of the class meetings (which was allowed by my attendance policy, but she lost 10% on participation), only turned in the two major assignments, received a D and an F on those, and emailed me when grades were posted to find out why she failed. Really? If she had passed, I would think that would warrant an explanation.

While I could go on a tirade against letter grades altogether, it frightens me that students are so blissfully unaware that the amount of work that they put into the class is directly related to the grade they receive. Are they unaware, or are they just so disappointed in themselves it has become denial?

LMAO!

All of our anonymous evals by students are gone over in our annual reviews with the chair of the department. Fortunately I've now been in place long enough that any particular review won't hurt me much.

But I still roil a bit at some of the ones that have been slung my way in the past, such as the year I got "Together with Dr. X and Dr. Y, constitutes the Axis of Evil."
